Historical Significance of the Arrangement of Flowers

This hasn’t become popular in a day or a year, rather has a long history associated with it, spread across eras and cultures.  The art of arranging flowers came into existence centuries ago, where its first footprints have been found to be related to the Roman and Greek times and the European era during the period of 14th to the 17th century, which later became a popular trend among Asians and Americans.

Use among Egyptians

Several researchers have discovered proofs for the existence of this art in the ancient Egypt times, which dates to around 2500 BC. During that time, Egyptians were known to use flowers for the decoration of their surroundings and their homes. Simple arrangements with the use of use of lovely vases were used in homes, for which flowers were sent by different cultures to Egypt.

Some elaborate arrangements were used during formal functions like funeral processions and others. However, some elaborate and ornate arrangements were used for the ceremonies of persons belonging to rich families, even at burial sites. Loved ones and members belonging to the family of the deceased used to wear garlands and flowers. Archaeologists found evidences of the pattern of the use of flower arrangements by Egyptians on pictures painted on walls, reliefs and ancient stone carvings.

Lotus flower or the water lily was used commonly because of being known as a representation of Isis, the Egyptian Goddess. Other popular species used by the ancient Egyptians include rose, delphinium and narcissus.

Romans and Greeks

Among the Greeks, flower arrangements were primarily used for adorning and decoration purposes and herbs were used as complementary elements. These flowers were interlaced into wreaths and garlands to be worn and hung from the ceilings, but were not used with vases like Egyptians. Often known as a symbol of victory and honor, these were presented during the Roman and Greek era to honor soldiers, leaders, champions and heroes.

Among Romans and Greeks, lilies, honeysuckle, violets and roses were some favorite flowers, while others like tulips and marigold gained popularity due to their color and shape. Often referred to as a luxury symbol, flowers have been in use by powerful and wealthy people for religious rituals. The representation of roses, as known today, for the expression of love has been used by the Romans as well. Their scent was used to create an overwhelmed environment during the meals, while these were tossed along with their petals on the floor during banquets.

Historical Significance among Chinese

The Chinese have been found to make use of flower arrangements during the Han Dynasty, around the era of 207 to 220 BC, when they were utilized for religious education and medicinal purposes. It has been discovered from paintings depicting the use of flower arrangements that cut flowers were usually placed on tables, while the paintings were commonly found on silk fabric, scrolls and vases.

Different Arrangements Used

Flowers have gained a huge admiration since the ancient times when different arrangements have been used by people for varied purposes. Among all the organizations used, some more popular ones include a horizontal arrangement, vertical arrangement, oval arrangement, triangular arrangement, minimal arrangement, crescent arrangement and Lazy S or Hogarth’s Curve. All these organizations are available for professionals and can be created by people at home by the use of a desired set and type of flowers.

There are many more facts related to the lovely floral arrangements and their history. With the rise of awareness regarding the use of flowers for purposes other than decoration and gifting ones, more people have started using them in their daily life. The decorative and religious aspects originated from from Europeans, Greek and Romans, while the medical significance was popular among Chinese. Researchers are working towards the discovery of other hidden aspects of the use of flowers.
